I have spent more time than I care to remember being afraid, whether it was as a child worrying that my parents would die, or as an adult worrying about my children, or through years of being out of a job. I’d like to say that my faith in God stayed strong throughout, but the truth is it often wavered. Then one year, while reading through the Bible, I started noticing how many times scripture says, “Do not be afraid,” or phrases very similar with the same meaning. When the count reached nearly a hundred different verses dealing specifically with the subject of fear and not being afraid, it dawned on me that maybe God, in His wisdom, was trying to tell me something. It also made me wonder just how many other people I knew were working through their fears and how they found the strength and courage to continue. As they began relating their stories of dreadful fears and terrible ordeals, an overriding theme began to emerge; no matter how desperate the times or how hopeless things may get, God’s mercies sustain us and build up our faith even when we have lost hope and see no way out. The stories in this book are coupled with many of the “don’t be afraid” Bible verses to illustrate just how relevant and encouraging God’s word is today during the messy ordeals of our lives, and how God’s words of promise and reassurance give us hope and comfort and peace.
